Lead or Principal Automation Engineer
Are you a sharp technical expert who thrives on solving complex automation challenges?
Ready to step away from long site hours and into a lead role that genuinely respects work–life balance?
About the role
This is an ideal opportunity for someone who has mastered troubleshooting complex automation systems and is ready to step into a Lead or Principal-level position where your expertise will shape both projects and people.
In this role, you’ll become the technical cornerstone of our clients’ automation department. You’ll be the go-to expert for complex PLC programming, SCADA development, and the integration of new variable speed drives into standard designs. Beyond the code, you’ll mentor engineers and technicians through hands-on guidance and training, ensuring every build and overhaul is fit for purpose and delivered to a high standard.
You’ll also oversee project progress, contribute to labour and material estimates, and identify opportunities to standardise and digitise engineering processes. The role requires strong computer and engineering skills, but equally important is your ability to communicate clearly, collaborate effectively, and build strong relationships with both vendors and customers.
You’ll be spending about 90% of your time in a professional office environment, focused on high-level engineering deliverables, technical leadership, and mentoring — not constantly travelling or living on-site.
We’re looking for someone who is ready to take ownership of technical standards, drive innovation, and help build a smarter, more sustainable engineering function, all while enjoying a career pace that supports long-term success.

What you bring
You are a degree-qualified engineer, ideally with 7+ years of experience in heavy manufacturing, mining, or power industries. You bring a proven track record in design, programming, commissioning, and installation of sophisticated automation systems.
Technically, you are highly proficient across major platforms, including Allen-Bradley, Rockwell Automation, Citect SCADA, HMI, and complex industrial control systems.
